Part Two: Personality
Another exciting aspect of uncovering your spiritual DNA is finding your personality type according to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment. If you’ve never understood why you act the way you do, this analysis helps to break down certain aspects of your personality. You’ll see yourself in each of the four parts explained after you’ve completed the assessment. The MBTI is a psychological test used in the secular world to help psychiatrists treat patients, however, in my search for the MBTI in 2016, I uncovered the types used to reveal godly personalities. So, once you’ve completed the MBTI assessment, visit the Godly Personalities – Spiritual Type Summaries page for the spiritual aspect of your personality.
I discovered that my personality type has changed in the past 20 years. I was shocked to learn it went from an ENTJ to an ENFP! Now, if you’ve never heard of those types, let alone the entire MBTI assessment, you’ll be confused. But, once you take the free test yourself, you can read all about my personality and, maybe understand me better, too. But, best of all, you’ll know yourself better, and how God created your personality and strengths to bring Him the glory, He deserves.
Part Three: Spiritual Gifts
The third aspect of your spiritual DNA is your spiritual gifts. Understanding my gifts was my favorite test in which to invest my time and energy. Discovering your spiritual gifts is like opening a whole new world to your walk with the One who gave you the gifts through the Holy Spirit. You gain a new confidence built on the foundation of God. He knitted you, created you, uniquely crafted for a particular purpose (like an afghan’s purpose is to keep you warm). When you allow Him access to the gifts, you already possess your fulfilled purpose through Him.
There are a million spiritual gifts tests out there. It’s hard to know which ones to trust. So, because of my personality type, I took several tests. I walked through this step-by-step process;
- I completed the tests/surveys/assessments.
- Wrote down the top 5 gifts from each For example: If you take four tests, that’s four lists of 5 gifts.
Each test will give different results depending upon several factors including the doctrinal focus. Also, if you take the tests at different times (rather than all at one sitting), this can also produce different results. But, not to worry, God created your gifts, and He will reveal them to you.
- Finally, from those lists, I wrote down the top 4 gifts.
- I prayed over the final list asking God to open my eyes to the truth.
I discovered through this process that my top four gifts are exhortation, faith, giving, and shepherding. Remember, you have all the gifts, but you have certain, what I call top-level gifts, which you focus on now to recognize your spiritual DNA.
I’m adding the links to the online spiritual gifts tests here. You don’t have to take each one, but decide for yourself which ones you feel the most comfortable. Once you’ve completed them, you will find definitions at the end of each survey to help you understand what your gifts mean, and how to use them. You can also search the internet for more information on your precise gifts.
It’s important to note, again, to use honesty and sincerity when taking any of these tests, inventories, or assessments. Because, seriously, what’s the point if you’re not honest. You won’t get an accurate, complete evaluation without it. This whole process will be a big waste of your time, energy, and money.
~ Spiritual Gifts Mix
Your unique spiritual gifts are not gifts to you, but gifts through you. In the Bible spiritual gifts are listed in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4 and a few random passages. Each combination creates a type of mix which can be used together in three (or more) ways. Your set will fall into one of these three combinations.
Motivational Spiritual Gifts Mix:
Do you find you can easily motivate people toward serving or improving their Christian journey? Then, motivational mix belongs to you. This combination of gifts includes teaching, showing mercy, exhortation, and prophecy by which you move people toward God. You also feel compelled to serve as well.
Situational Spiritual gifts Mix:
You have all the spiritual gifts God created, but not all come to the surface at the same time. In fact, most occasionally apply for specific situational situations. For instance, use of healing, discernment, and miracles operate when the Holy Spirit anoints you specifically for a task.
Equipping Spiritual Gifts Mix:
Creating a garden takes specialized equipment. You must provide yourself with the necessary tools. The same goes for God who provides you with a unique group of gifts. The equipping mix expresses itself typically through leaders who disciple people toward Christian maturity. These divine gifts include evangelism, teaching, or pastoring.
Hopefully, by now you’ve got a sense of your strengths, personality, and spiritual gifts. You see your unique formation through new eyes. Next, you’ll want to work through steps 4 and 5: Your Passions and Your Story to get a well-rounded perspective on your life’s mission.
